A former New York State legislator, U.S. Senator, Mayor of New York City, and a member of the commission that oversaw the initial surveys for a cross-state canal that started in 1810, Clinton spearheaded the political effort to bring the canal into being. WebIn the same year the Erie Canal bill was approved, in 1817, DeWitt Clinton was elected to his first term as Governor of N.Y.S. In his capacity as Governor he was able to break ground for the construction of the Erie Canal on July 4, 1817. Clinton was reelected to Governor of New York State in 1819.
